Reverse Engineering

   Reverse-engineering is a method of creating digital 3D/2D models from an existing physical item.  It’s mainly utilized by organizations because of; obsolete documentation, the original builder of an existing product is no longer available or assessing competitor’s products.
   
In current scenario hi-end CAD/CAM packages made reverse engineering more viable to create 3D digital model of the existing physical part, to-be accessible in various CAD, CAM, CAE or other operations. Reverse engineering processes involve scanning of the physical part into point clouds and then the help of a CAD application, surfaces got constructed for added operations such as 3D detailing, creating 2D manufacturing drawing, real time rendering etc.
   
In the case of assessing competitor’s products, it is used to analyze, for instance, aesthetical shapes, how a product works, what it does, and what materials used, estimate costs, and identify possible patent violation.
